This is a very early timepiece dating c1675 and is very much in the manner of the very first Dutch pendulum clocks. The ebony case is topped with a cast gilt brass floral cresting. Similar cast mounts round the glazed and hinged door. Key lock to the right. Glazed panels to either side and brass eyelets at the top rear for hanging the clock. The clock case has simple moldings to the front and sides at the base and top. Dial plate (with movement attached to the rear of the dial) is hinged on left. Rear inside of case is walnut veneered with ebony stringing.
A 6 ½” wide by 7 ½” high rectangular dial with 5 ¾” gilt chapter ring. Roman hour chapters, Arabic minute numbers at every minute inside the minute ring. Quarters ring to inner edge of the chapter ring and arrow half hour markers. Pierced and engraved brass hands. Winding arbor with brass bush above the VI mid way to the center arbor. Engraved gilt plaque below the dial signed Theodore Demire, Paris covering a pendulum starting aperture. All set on a black velvet surround.
2 ¼” x 5” brass plated movement with four vase (earn) shaped pillars. Four wheel movement with spring barrel and horizontal crown wheel to verge escapement. Silk suspension, short bob pendulum and cycloidal cheeks.
Demire is listed in Baillie as working c1674. Tardy in Dictionnaire des Horlogers Fran ç ais list Demire as a master (Maitre), Saint-Germain des Pr é s, 1673. M. à Paris 1675.
