An American Tallcase Clock with Masonic Symbols in Cherry Case. c1820
We are offering this rare early American tallcase clock with numerous Masonic symbols depicted on the dial.

This American clock has a warm and rich toned cherry wood case with swan neck pediment to the hood and walnut inlay. The case is particularly elegant because of its proportions and slender lines. The inlay adds to its esthetic value.

The dial becomes the focal point of this clock. The arch of its painted dial is full of symbols in gold creating interest for anyone and perhaps affection from those closely connected with these metaphors. The dial has Arabic hour chapters and Arabic minutes indicated at each quarter hour. The hands are of pierced brass. There is a seconds dial below the 12 marker.

The wooden movement tells of the period after American independence when there was a shift from buying goods made in Europe to locally produced items. Brass was not readily available so enterprising inventors in Connecticut found that gears made of hardwood could be substituted for bass. This clock is a creation of that invention. The wooden movement is cord winding, weight driven and runs for 30 hours at each winding..

The clock dates to first quarter of 19th Century.

Size 95” high by 14” wide
