A Fine Satinwood bell top Bracket Clock with Painted Dial. c1790
The satinwood and mahogany case has a typical bell top with a brass handle to top of case. Prince of Wales (three feather) motif inlay to corners. French style splayed feet. Inlaid lines of boxwood and ebony. Full width front door with 8” circular glaze window, window in rear door, 3 ¾” circular side windows. Ivory door lock inlays, front and rear.
The clock has an 8” diameter white painted dial on flat steel base. Roman hour chapters and double ringed minute markers with diamond five minute markers. Two winding holes on the III / IX line with 2 3/8” spacing. Dial signed Burrows, London. Chain link, moonpoise matching brass hands. Dial held to front plate by 4 brass pillars.
The movement has plain rectangular plates 5 5/8” by 7 5/8”. Five pillar, twin fusee, rack striking, striking on a top mounted bell. Anchor recoil escapement. The movement is held to case by two winged screws through base into the bottom pillars. Repeat cord attached to rack hook. 8 day movement. Gut lines. Brass pendulum bob with reverse adjustment.
Joseph Burrows of London. According to Baillie; Burrows was apprenticed c1763, free of Clockmakers Company c1773, livery CC c1803 and died c1816. Britten’s says Burrows was apprenticed to Wm. Addis of Birchin La. Watchmaker 28 Oct 1765; f.5 Apr 1773; Livery 1803; d. 1816. CCs of Wm., St Leonard, Shoreditch.
