An unusual timepiece with papier mache case, ebonized with gilt floral decoration around the case and base. Central gilt decoration of musical instruments and leaves. brass bezel hinged to right with convex glass. Case of waisted design raised on a larger decorated base with bracket feet. Shaped full rear door with circular window viewing the signature. Movement is wound through a single winding hole in the case just below the dial bezel. Label inside for Camerer Cuss & Co. 54/56 New Oxford St. London Est. 1788.
Five inch diameter white enamel dial. Arabic upright hour chapters with minute dots and stars at the quarters. Hands of blued steel.
The large brass plated 4 pillar, eight day movement has shaped plates 4 ¾” wide and 6 ½” high upper and lower edges curved. Time only movement with single fusee and bronze line. Anchor escapement, brass pendulum rod and bob. Movement held into the case by two engraved brackets bolted to the sides. Back cock engraved also rear plate with fancy edge engraving signed Wm. Weston, London in a central oval cartouche.
Britten's lists William Weston 1790 to 1818 in Smithfield , 23 Greenhills Rents ( London ) as an enameller. Baillie lists William Webster, London in Limehouse mid 18c. He made a longcase lacquer clock and watches. The Georgian Bracket Clock p193 plate VI/20 shows an almost identical clock. Paperware is a mixture of pulped paper, glue and chalk which is pressed and molded then baked. Originates from Persia . Is a form on papier mache.
